Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah
In a significant political shake-up, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has formally dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), announcing his move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Mbah made the declaration in a live broadcast to residents of Enugu, emphasizing that the decision was guided by a broader vision to align the state with the federal government for enhanced development.
> “There comes always a time when everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny. Today, after a long reflection, we have made a decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress,” Mbah stated.
While acknowledging the platform that launched his political journey, Mbah expressed appreciation to the PDP for its support during his campaign and early days in office.
> “To the Peoples Democratic Party which provided us the platform on which we campaigned and won, I extend deep gratitude. The PDP supported us through a demanding campaign and joined us in celebrating the victory,” he noted.
Describing his move as a strategic and necessary step, the governor said the realignment was essential to unlock new opportunities and foster stronger ties with the central administration.
> “Leadership demands difficult, even painful decisions, in the service of higher principles and goals,” Mbah said, reiterating his belief that leadership sometimes requires tough but necessary choices.
Governor Mbah also hailed President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that Enugu has already begun to benefit from the President’s national policies and support mechanisms.
The defection was not a solo act—joining Mbah in his move to the APC were members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, local government chairpersons, councillors, and other key political figures across the state.
This development follows a pattern of realignments within the region, with sources indicating that Bayelsa Governor Duoye Diri’s shift to the APC is imminent. Earlier in the year, the governors of Delta and Akwa Ibom States—Sheriff Oborevwori and Umo Eno—also transitioned to the ruling party alongside their teams.
With Mbah’s defection, the political landscape in the South-East appears poised for a major transformation as key states move closer to the federal center.
