At Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital in Enugu, neurosurgeons have triumphantly completed two intricate brain operations, with both patients showing swift and impressive recoveries.
During a Wednesday address to the university’s academic staff, principal officers, and service directors, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Christian Anieke shared details of these medical milestones.
In one procedure, specialists skillfully extracted a blood clot from the brain of an elderly patient, significantly improving his health and mobility. In another, the team performed a critical decompressive craniotomy on a stroke patient to alleviate severe brain swelling and promote recovery.
Anieke emphasized that these achievements highlight the skill, commitment, and collaboration of the hospital’s neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, and support staff.
He added that the successes underscore the hospital’s dedication to providing top-tier healthcare to Enugu and beyond through advanced surgical interventions.
Additionally, Anieke announced that nursing students will begin their academic programs at the university’s main campus in October.
He also revealed that the institution has secured grants from international organizations for various research initiatives, a testament to its growing global academic reputation.
Anieke further noted the introduction of an intelligence test for final-year students to ensure graduates meet international benchmarks.
Prof. Frank Akpuaka, Provost of the College of Medicine, praised the vice-chancellor for recruiting highly skilled medical professionals.
He also highlighted the acquisition of a state-of-the-art computerized tomography (CT) machine valued at over N1 billion and a new facility for medical staff and academic activities, which will support the university’s expansion efforts.
