No fewer than 200 youths have been trained on local vocational skills acquisition programmes in five different project locations in Maiduguri Municipal Council, Jere, and Bama LGAs of Borno State.

The training was organised by GreenCode, a Non-Governmental Organization, in partnership with International Alert, which engage in humanitarian supports for the victims of Boko Haram insurgency in the state.

The GreenCode Project Officer, Mr Samson Oyeleke in an opening remark at the graduation ceremony held in Maiduguri on Monday, said the 3 months training would prevent jobless youths in the state from joining Boko Haram insurgents, and engaging in other social vices.

“This project which was tagged: “Trans-Sahara Countering Terrorism Partner shop (TSCTP” was aimed at reducing the risk of recruitment of community members by Boko Haram Terrorists by way of engaging communities in prevention activities to counter violent extremisms,” he said.

He added that the organisation was conscious of the implications of displacement of about 2 million people in the state and how they can be lured into violent extremism as well as other criminal acts when they are not properly engaged.

Mr. Samson, further, explained that the project also provided start-up tools and kits for the trainers chosen from the 3 LGA, which are believe to be highly affected by the crisis for over a decade.

Reacting, The Borno State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Hon. Saina Buba, represented by a Director of Youths in the ministry, Hajiya Hadiza Lawan, commended GreenCode and International Alert for the training and urged the trainees to make proper use of the tools given to them.

Items given to the beneficiaries include sawing machines, welding equipment, grinding machines carpentry tools and deep freezers among others.
