By EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja-
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it is set to conduct outstanding by-elections and resume the Continuous Voters’ Registration (CVR) nationwide.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this disclosure at a quarterly meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Abuja.
Yakubu stated, “I am glad to announce that the commission is now in a position to conduct the bye-elections and to resume CVR nationwide.
The commission met on Tuesday and we are finalising the details for both activities which will be made public in the next 24 hours.”
The INEC Chairman also updated the CSOs on the commission’s preparations for the Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 8 and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections on February 21, 2026.
He urged the CSOs to monitor these activities and promptly upload their applications for accreditation of observers for the Anambra election.
Executive Director of the Centre for Transparency Advocacy, Faith Nwadishi, commended INEC’s recommendations on electoral reforms and innovations introduced to improve elections.
She, however, called on the National Assembly to fast-track the amendment of the Electoral Act and urged INEC to involve CSOs in public sensitisation on the CVR programme.
