Kidnappers of ex-Nasarawa dep. gov demand N70 million ransom

Kidnappers of Prof Onjey Gewado, a former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, have demanded the sum of seventy million naira (N70,000,000) ransom.

This was disclosed to our correspondent by a family source who is monitoring the developments.

Recall that Professor Onje Gye-Wado, was kidnapped Thursday night in his village Rinza, near Wamba, the headquarters of Wamba local government area by unknown gunmen.

The source said “the kidnappers are in touch with the family of Prof and they demanded for the sum of N70 million naira, the family offered them N2 million naira, but they are still dragging”.


“The family told the kidnappers that today Friday, till Monday, is public holiday, there is no where they can get money and they want him (Prof), back alive” the source  said.

In the meantime, the Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the kidnap of former Deputy Governor of the state, Professor Onje Gye -Wado by unknown gunmen.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ramhan Nansel, said unspecified number of gunmen invaded the resident of the former Deputy Governor and took him to an unknown destination.

The statement explained that the police in a swift response to the incidence, mobilized its personnel to the area but the hoodlums had already fled with the victim before their arrival at the scene.

It added that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Maiyaki Baba had further deployed reinforcement teams of Police, military, vigilante, and local hunters to complement the ongoing search for immediate rescue of the former Deputy Governor and arrest perpetrators.
