A devastating road accident on Ikorodu Road in Lagos has left an eight-month-old baby and a female passenger dead, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed that the tragic collision occurred opposite Olabode House, between Anthony and Obanikoro.
According to LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, preliminary investigations revealed that a red Tata commercial bus, traveling at high speed from Palmgrove toward Anthony, suddenly lost control.
“In a catastrophic sequence, the bus veered off its lane, broke through the median barrier, and collided head-on with a Volkswagen commercial bus coming from Anthony to Palmgrove,” Bakare-Oki explained.
The force of the impact killed a female passenger on the Volkswagen bus instantly, while an eight-month-old infant aboard the vehicle succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
LASTMA operatives, joined by concerned members of the public, immediately launched a coordinated rescue and recovery effort. Ten victims, including the drivers of both vehicles, were extricated from the wreckage with serious injuries. Six passengers were rescued from the Volkswagen bus, while four others were pulled from the red Tata bus.
The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) promptly transported the injured to nearby hospitals, while officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) handled the remains of the deceased. Police from the Ilupeju Division secured the scene throughout the operation.
Bakare-Oki extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, expressing particular concern for the mother of the infant, who sustained severe injuries and is receiving medical care.
He used the incident to caution all motorists, especially commercial drivers, urging strict adherence to speed limits and traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
