Madagascar clinched their first-ever African Nations Championship (CHAN) final appearance, defeating Sudan 1-0 in a gripping extra-time battle at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on August 26, 2025.
A dramatic 116th-minute goal by substitute Toky Rakotondraibe propelled the Barea to the final, setting up a showdown against either Senegal or Morocco in Nairobi on Saturday.
The semi-final clash saw both teams, each chasing their first CHAN final, locked in a tense struggle. Madagascar, who earned bronze in 2022, faced a Sudanese side making their third semi-final appearance after falling short in 2011 and 2018.
The first half was a cautious affair, with Sudan’s Mohamed Tia Asad and Mazin Al Bahli testing Madagascar’s goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa, who stood firm with critical saves.
Madagascar’s Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa and Fenohasina Razafimaro also created chances but failed to break the deadlock.
Sudan dominated after the interval, with Walieldin Khdir missing a golden opportunity in the 53rd minute and Mubark Abdalla’s late strike thwarted by Madagascar’s steadfast defense. Madagascar’s Bono Rabearivelo came close to scoring in normal time, but Sudan’s goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja made vital stops to force extra time.
In the additional 30 minutes, both sides traded blows. Sudan’s Mohamed Ahmed Saeed and Musa Hussien pressed, but Ramandimbisoa held strong.
Madagascar responded with long-range attempts, only for Abooja to deny them. The decisive moment came late in extra time when Rafanomezantsoa set up Rakotondraibe, who slotted home a composed finish to spark jubilation among Madagascar’s players and supporters.
“This victory is a testament to our unity and belief,” said Madagascar’s coach Romuald Rakotondrabe. “The players fought until the final moment, and this is for the people of Madagascar.”
Sudan’s coach Kwesi Appiah expressed disappointment but praised his team’s effort, noting, “We gave everything, but it wasn’t enough. We’ll regroup for the third-place match.”
Madagascar now aim to become the first island nation to claim a senior CAF title at the Moi Sports Centre in Nairobi. Sudan, meanwhile, will compete for third place in Dar es Salaam on Friday. CHAN PAMOJA 2024 continues to deliver thrilling moments and showcase Africa’s rising football talents.
