Morocco secured their spot in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) final, overcoming defending champions Senegal 5-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in extra time at Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on August 26, 2025.
The Atlas Lions now prepare to face Madagascar in the final in Nairobi, following Madagascar’s earlier victory over Sudan.
Senegal struck first in the 16th minute, with Joseph Layousse nodding in a pinpoint corner from Libasse Guèye, showcasing the title holders’ early dominance.
Morocco responded swiftly, as Sabir Bougrine unleashed a stunning long-range strike in the 23rd minute to level the score at 1-1, igniting the Atlas Lions’ momentum. Despite chances at both ends—Layousse missing another header and Morocco’s Anas Bach being thwarted by Senegal’s goalkeeper Marc Diouf—the first half ended even.
The second half saw Morocco dictate possession, while Senegal’s aerial prowess and quick counterattacks kept the pressure on.
Goalkeepers El Mehdi Al Harrar and Diouf shone, with Al Harrar denying Senegal’s advances and Diouf stopping shots from Youssef Mehri and Oussama Lamlaoui. Substitutions, including Morocco’s Ayoub Khairi and Salaheddine Errahouli and Senegal’s Insa Boye and Ababacar Sarr, added fresh legs but no breakthrough.
In extra time, Lamlaoui’s 119th-minute header was saved, and Senegal’s Bonaventure Fonseca fired just over, leading to a tense penalty shootout.
Morocco’s Hrimat, Lamlaoui, Khairi, Bach, and Mehri converted all five penalties with precision, while Senegal’s captain Seyni Ndiaye struck the crossbar on their first attempt. Despite successful kicks from Cissé, Ciss, and Ba, Senegal fell 5-3 in the shootout, ending their title defense. This victory marks Morocco’s third CHAN final appearance in six years.
“Our players showed incredible focus under pressure,” said Morocco’s coach Tarik Sektioui.
“We’re here to fight for the title, and this win proves our determination.” Senegal’s coach Souleymane Diallo remained optimistic despite the loss, stating, “Our young squad showed courage. Penalties are harsh, but this team has a bright future ahead.”
Morocco now head to Nairobi’s Moi Sports Centre Kasarani for Saturday’s final against Madagascar, aiming for a third CHAN crown. Senegal will face Sudan in the third-place playoff in Dar es Salaam on Friday, hoping to end their campaign on a positive note. CHAN PAMOJA 2024 continues to deliver unforgettable drama and emerging talent.
