A tragic incident has rocked Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, as a young man identified as Prosper lost his life during a cult initiation process.
According to eyewitnesses, Prosper died on Sunday after undergoing repeated drilling exercises at the hands of cult members.
The deceased had reportedly approached a family member, Cosmos, who is a senior member of the Aye confraternity group, expressing his desire to join the cult.
Cosmos allegedly linked him with other members, who took him to the initiation venue.
Tragedy struck when Prosper slumped during the initiation and was rushed to a hospital at Jattu, where he was pronounced dead.
As one source noted, “The drilling was too much for him.”
The police have confirmed the incident, with CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson of the Edo Police Command, stating, “The deceased slumped during the initiation and was rushed to a hospital at Jattu, where he was confirmed dead.
“The suspect is in police custody while investigation on the matter is ongoing.”
As the investigation unfolds, the incident has raised concerns about the dangers of cultism and the need for authorities to take decisive action against those involved.
“Cultism is a menace that must be tackled head-on,” said a community leader.
“We need to protect our young people from these unscrupulous individuals.” He said.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with cult initiation and the importance of holding those responsible accountable.
