The Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, has freed 77 inmates from the Abolongo Correctional Facility in Oyo, Oyo State.
The inmates, who were awaiting trial for various offenses, were released during a prison visit by the CJ, represented by Justice Ladiran Akintola.
Yerima stated that the prison facilities were overstretched, necessitating the decongestion exercise.
“We hope that the goal of getting this facility decongested would have been achieved at the end of this visit today,” she said.
The released inmates included those battling health issues such as tuberculosis and kidney problems.
The CJ urged the freed inmates to turn over a new leaf and engage in productive activities.
“Don’t go back to your way of sin and crime again, rather engage in a work possible for you and within your capabilities,” Yerima advised.
The Comptroller of Correction, Oyo State, CC Dare Opadeji, appreciated the visit and appealed for more regular visits, suggesting monthly or quarterly visits.
Yerima responded that the judiciary would look into making the visits more regular.
The exercise aims to reduce the prison’s population and ensure justice is served.
