Residents of Maiduguri Metropolis were thrilled with a Sallah Durbar at Shehu's Palace.

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin Elkanemi, Speaker Borno State House of Assembly- Abdulkarim Lawan; Former Governor of Borno, Senator Ali Sheriff, former Deputy Governor, Alhaji Usman Mamman Durkwa and many top government officials and Political Leaders attended the eid prayers amid thousands of worshippers.

After the eid prayers, residents of Maiduguri Metropolis were thrilled with a Sallah Durbar at Shehu’s Palace.

The Durbar festival is an annual cultural, religious and equestrian festival celebrated in several northern cities of Nigeria including Borno, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zazzau, Bauchi, Bida and Ilorin.

The festival marks the end of Ramadan and also coincides with the Muslim festivities of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitri.

It began with prayers at dawn, followed by a colourful mounted parade of the Royal families, district heads, traditional title holders, among others who all mounted horses to perform the celebration.

Horse riders are a significant aspect of the Durbar Festival all bearing peculiar designs, patterns, and adornments.

The venue was adorned beautifully with all forms of traditional decoration to usher in visitors. There were different cultural dance display as the dancers moved in synchronisation to the drums and music.

At the Durbar festivals, noblemen travel to pay homage to the Shehu of Borno and reaffirm their loyalty to their various emirates.

To this end, Senator Shettima led top government and APC officials to Shehu’s Palace for the Sallah Durbar for about three hours.

District heads, village and ward heads among title holders and royal families, all of them adorned with colourful ceremonial regalia mounted horses on match, to perform during the durbar.
