Rivers State lawmaker, late Senator Barinada Mpigi
Nigerian Senate has been thrown into mourning following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the 10th Assembly. He was 64 years old.
Until his passing, Mpigi served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, where he played a key role in shaping policies and overseeing critical infrastructure projects across the country.
During his time in the Red Chamber, the late lawmaker was known for his active participation in plenary debates, particularly on issues bordering on national development and environmental governance in the Niger Delta region.
Colleagues described him as a committed legislator whose interventions reflected deep concern for sustainable development and the welfare of his constituents.
Mpigi was also a close political associate of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and remained influential within Rivers State politics until his death.
In recent months, he had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, a move that attracted significant political attention.
His death marks the fourth time a serving lawmaker of the Nigerian Senate has passed away since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly in June 2023.
Tributes are expected to pour in from colleagues, political leaders, and constituents, as the Senate prepares to honour his memory and contributions to national development.
