President Bola Tinubu has expressed gratitude to former President Muhammadu Buhari for declaring June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day and officially recognizing Chief MKO Abiola as the duly elected President of Nigeria after the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Honouring the Heroes
Speaking at the Joint Session of the National Assembly to commemorate Nigeria’s 2025 Democracy Day, Tinubu paid tribute to other heroes of democracy.
“Whilst Abiola was the June 12’s central figure, Nigerians must not forget the long list of those who equally deserved to be called heroes of Nigerian democracy,” he said.
The President specifically honoured the memories of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, Pa Alfred Rewane, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Commodore Dan Suleiman, and several others who fought for democracy.
“We must celebrate the courage of those who were murdered, imprisoned, exiled, and tortured by the military regime,” Tinubu emphasized.
Tinubu also announced the conferment of posthumous national honours on notable figures, including MKO Abiola, Humphrey Nwosu, and Yar’Adua.
“As we mark a twenty-sixth year of unbroken democracy, it is right to honour those who have made sacrifices in the past,” he said.
The President conferred the national honour of CFR on Kudirat Abiola, a heroine of the June 12 struggle.
