A devastating incident occurred in the Tudun-Wadan Pantami community of Gombe Metropolis on Saturday, resulting in the electrocution of five persons and injuring 13 others.
Gombe State Police Command confirmed the incident, attributing the cause to a high-voltage surge from a nearby electricity transformer.
According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday.
He said police officers from the Low-cost Divisional Police Headquarters promptly responded to the scene, securing the area and evacuating the victims to hospitals for medical attention.
The police confirmed that five individuals lost their lives, while 13 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The deceased were deposited at different morgues, including the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) Gombe, State Specialist Hospital, and Bolari Filin Kwallo Mortuary.
The injured victims are receiving medical attention at various health facilities in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Bello Yahaya, through DSP Abdullahi, expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
The police assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the surge and ensure accountability where necessary.
