United Nations (UN) on Thursday commemorated the 24th anniversary of the devastating 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, reflecting on the tragedy that struck its host city, New York.
The UN, headquartered in New York for nearly eight decades, expressed unwavering support for the city’s residents.
“For nearly 80 years, New York has been the home of the United Nations, hosting our staff, diplomats, and every Secretary-General,” said UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.
“We stand with New Yorkers today, as we did 24 years ago during that tragic moment.”
The attacks on the World Trade Center’s twin towers claimed nearly 3,000 lives from over 90 nations and left countless others injured.
Survivors and first responders continue to grapple with long-term health issues, including respiratory conditions, cancer, and mental health challenges.
Secretary-General António Guterres, in a heartfelt social media post, shared, “New York, home to our UN Headquarters and many of our colleagues, holds a special place in my heart. My thoughts today are with those who lost loved ones on 9/11 and with all New Yorkers.”
The UN reiterated its commitment to honoring the memory of the victims and supporting New York’s ongoing journey of recovery and resilience.
