Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has assured Nigerians that the long-awaited amendment of the 1999 Constitution will be treated with the “diligence, fairness, and urgency” it deserves.
Speaking on Monday during the National Public Hearing on the Constitution Review in Abuja, the Speaker pledged the House’s full commitment to pushing through a successful constitutional review, a feat that has eluded previous National Assemblies.
> “As Speaker, I pledge that we will take your contributions seriously and consider the bills with diligence, fairness, and urgency,” Abbas declared.
He emphasized that the House would work collaboratively with State Assemblies, the executive, and the Nigerian people to ensure a smooth and inclusive amendment process.
> “We will engage the State Assemblies respectfully and transparently to secure their concurrence. We would continue to work with the executive and with you, the people, to ensure that the amendment process proceeds smoothly,” he added.
Abbas also commended Nigerians for participating actively in the public hearing, describing their involvement as essential to shaping a constitution that reflects “the will and aspirations of the people.”
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, echoed Abbas’ remarks, promising a transparent and inclusive review process.
Also in attendance was Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, representing President Bola Tinubu. Akume praised the committee’s effort to involve diverse voices — from civil society and political groups to professional bodies and traditional rulers.
He reiterated the federal government’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through meaningful reforms.
The current review process marks another critical opportunity for Nigeria to address longstanding constitutional challenges and reflect the evolving needs of its people.
