Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo
Kogi State Government has approved new fees for campaign billboards, posters and other promotional materials ahead of the 2027 general elections and the 2026 local government polls.
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, said presidential candidates will pay ₦150 million, while senatorial, House of Representatives and State Assembly candidates will pay ₦50 million, ₦30 million and ₦5 million respectively.
He added that chairmanship candidates will pay ₦2 million, while councillorship candidates will pay ₦300,000 under the new campaign signage regulations.
Fanwo said the policy is intended to regulate political advertising, enforce compliance with signage laws and generate revenue for the state.
Warning against violations, he said, “In Kogi, APC is the ruling party, but that does not exempt any APC candidate from complying with the law. If you are an APC candidate and you did not pay the prescribed fee before placing your billboards or posters, we will remove them, and you will be prosecuted.”
He added that the Kogi State Signage and Advertisement Agency (KOSSAA) will begin enforcing the regulations from next week.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi rejected the policy, describing the approved charges as excessive, unfair and undemocratic.
State PDP Chairman, Mohammed Gambo, said, “Elections are contests of ideas, service, and the will of the people. Government regulation must never become a financial barrier capable of determining who can effectively communicate with the electorate.”
The opposition party also argued that extending the charges to campaign items such as T-shirts, caps and other materials could raise constitutional concerns and called on the state government to review the fees through wider consultations with political parties and other stakeholders.
