Federal Government has sanctioned a N12,000 fee for kidney dialysis under the Kidney Dialysis Subsidy Scheme, a significant reduction from the previous N50,000.
Deputy Director and Head of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Mr. Alaba Balogun, announced this development in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday.
Balogun emphasized that this initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on patients, particularly vulnerable Nigerians, by making dialysis more affordable and advancing the goal of Universal Health Coverage.
“This measure reflects the current administration’s commitment to easing the challenges faced by patients with kidney conditions and enhancing access to quality healthcare,” he stated.
The pilot phase of the scheme is currently active in 11 federal tertiary hospitals across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, with plans for future expansion.
The participating hospitals include Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, University of Jos Teaching Hospital, National Hospital, Abuja, Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta, Lagos, University College Hospital, Ibadan, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri, and Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki.
Balogun clarified that the Northwestern states are not excluded from the subsidy program, reaffirming the government’s dedication to inclusive healthcare access nationwide under its Renewed Hope Agenda.
He added that more federal hospitals would be incorporated into the scheme to broaden access to subsidized dialysis sessions.
