Over 400 golf enthusiasts are set to converge at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club (TYB-IGRCC) in Abuja for the Nigeria @ 65 Independence Golf Tournament.
The week-long event, held in celebration of Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary, will also serve as a tribute to the gallant men and women—past and present—of the Nigerian Army.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Dr. James Agbonhese, shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that the tournament is designed to foster unity, sportsmanship, and national pride.
“This goes beyond golf. It’s a celebration of the values that define us as Nigerians—resilience, unity, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence,” Agbonhese said.
As part of the celebration, several new facilities will be unveiled at the TYB-IGRCC, including a midway hut, a state-of-the-art practice range, a starter shed for the back nine holes, and a new golf cart bay.
Agbonhese also expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, who serves as the Grand Patron of the tournament, for his continuous support.
Speaking on behalf of the Club Captain, Maj.-Gen. Samson Jiya, Vice Chairman of TYB Golf Club, Dr. Ali Peters, highlighted the symbolic significance of the event.
“This tournament is not just about sport—it’s a moment to honour the legacy of our founding fathers and the sacrifices of the armed forces in preserving Nigeria’s unity,” he said.
Jummai Adamu, a LOC member, revealed that over 100 female golfers, including three professionals, are expected to participate—underscoring the growing presence of women in the Nigerian golf scene.
Tournament Manager Mr. Shola Adebayo added that the schedule includes not only competitive rounds but also cultural showcases and networking opportunities, promising a memorable experience for players and spectators alike.
“This isn’t just a golf tournament—it’s a celebration of heritage and excellence,” he remarked.
The tournament officially begins on September 27 and concludes on October 1 with a ceremonial tee-off.
Among the high-profile attendees expected are the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi; Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Undiandeye. Also in attendance will be diplomats, senior retired officers, and other esteemed guests.
The grand finale will feature an award ceremony to honour winners across various categories, including the overall champion of the tournament.
