Bayelsa State Police Command has launched an investigation following the arrest of a suspected ritualist allegedly found in possession of suspected human parts in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Musa Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Peter Alale from Agbere Community in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state, was apprehended by security operatives during a routine operation.
According to the police, the suspect was caught with a broken white plate containing what authorities suspect to be human body parts.
During interrogation, Alale reportedly told investigators that he discovered the items at the Sagbama Council Secretariat Junction, Mile 3, in Sagbama area and was on his way to dispose of them in a nearby bush when he was arrested.
Police authorities said the recovered exhibits have been taken for medical examination and forensic analysis to determine whether they are actually human remains.
The Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State, CP Iyamah Daniel, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police command also appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified reports capable of causing fear or tension within the state.
“The Bayelsa State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and will continue to clamp down on all forms of criminal activities,” the statement added.
