Justin Gaethje dethroned Ilia Topuria on Sunday night to become the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion in a landmark event that saw the White House host its first-ever professional sporting contest.
According to Reuters, UFC Freedom 250 was staged on the South Lawn as part of activities marking the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations, drawing global attention to an event unlike any in the promotion’s history.
Gaethje survived a difficult start against the previously unbeaten champion before turning the fight in his favour with a relentless display. By the end of the fourth round, Topuria had taken significant damage and his corner elected to stop the contest, handing the American a career-defining victory.
The result ended Topuria’s unbeaten professional record and crowned Gaethje the new UFC lightweight champion.
Earlier in the night, Ciryl Gane claimed the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship with a second-round stoppage victory over former two-division champion Alex Pereira. Gane controlled much of the contest with his striking before finishing the fight in the second round.
The seven-fight card transformed the White House South Lawn into an outdoor arena and marked a first for the presidential residence. The event combined championship-level mixed martial arts with celebrations tied to America’s 250th anniversary, attracting attention from fans across the world.
While the venue provided a historic backdrop, the night ultimately belonged to Gaethje, whose victory over Topuria ensured UFC Freedom 250 will be remembered for more than just its setting.
