Former INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu
Former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu has formally assumed office as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, stepping into a strategic diplomatic assignment aimed at deepening economic and energy ties with the Gulf state.
Yakubu arrived in Doha on Wednesday and was received by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of Protocol at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside 13 African ambassadors, Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Philip Mshelbila, and President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Qatar, Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba.
The former electoral umpire, whose tenure at the INEC ended last year, was among President Bola Tinubu’s diplomatic nominees.
His assumption of office marks a dramatic transition from managing Nigeria’s elections to spearheading the country’s diplomatic and economic interests in one of the world’s wealthiest and most influential Gulf nations.
Yakubu’s new assignment places him at the centre of Abuja’s drive to attract foreign investments and strengthen cooperation in the gas sector, where both Nigeria and Qatar hold vast reserves.
Analysts say his immediate priorities will include aligning Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas” initiative with Qatari expertise, wooing investments from the Qatar Investment Authority into agriculture, aviation, digital infrastructure and real estate, while also leveraging Doha’s growing influence in regional diplomacy.
He is equally expected to deepen Nigeria-Qatar relations, strengthen the welfare of Nigerians in the Gulf and harness diaspora resources for economic development.
The warm reception accorded the former election chief by African diplomats and top international officials underscored Nigeria’s strategic importance in Qatar and signalled the high expectations surrounding his new role.
