Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered a decisive security response to halt the wave of political violence and killings in Osun State as preparations intensify for the August 15 governorship election.
The directive was delivered by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the South-West, Adegoke Fayoade, during a meeting with Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Government House in **Osogbo>.
Fayoade disclosed that the IGP had instructed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing Zone 11, alongside the Osun State Commissioner of Police, to ensure that political violence, killings and other criminal acts are dealt with decisively.
He said security operatives have been directed to thoroughly investigate all reported incidents, arrest those found culpable and ensure they face prosecution. According to him, the police are also strengthening security arrangements across the state to guarantee a peaceful, transparent and credible governorship election.
In his response, Governor Adeleke welcomed the intervention, describing it as a necessary step toward restoring public confidence ahead of the poll.
The governor, however, stressed that efforts to restore peace must go beyond increased security deployment, urging law enforcement agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the recent killings reported in Ikire, Ilobu and Esa-Oke.
Adeleke further appealed to the police leadership to remain impartial, uphold the rule of law and provide a secure environment that will allow residents to participate freely and without fear during the August 15 governorship election.
