Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has directed security agencies to launch an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators of the deadly attack on Saai Community in Mbajir Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, where about 10 residents were killed by suspected armed herdsmen.
Governor Alia also ordered security operatives to strengthen security in the area to safeguard farmers and prevent further attacks.
The attack occurred on Wednesday when the assailants, believed to be armed herdsmen, invaded the community, killing about 10 people and leaving several others with varying degrees of injuries.
Reacting to the incident, Governor Alia, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, condemned the attack, describing it as a senseless assault on innocent citizens.
Lamenting the tragedy, the governor said:
“This attack is an ugly, cowardly and unacceptable act of violence, particularly as it came at a crucial time when hardworking farmers who have returned to their ancestral lands were cultivating their farms.
“These enemies of progress have chosen to disrupt the peace and food security of our state by targeting the moment when crops are developing and the hope for a bountiful harvest is high.”
Governor Alia expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and those receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.
“My heart goes out to those who lost their loved ones as well as other victims currently receiving medical attention; we pray for their swift and total recovery. I stand in solidarity with the entire Saai community during this period of immense grief.”
He urged residents of Katsina-Ala and the entire Benue State not to lose hope, assuring them that his administration remains committed to protecting lives and property.
According to the statement, the governor insisted that his government would not allow criminal elements to force residents off their ancestral lands.
“Our administration remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting your lives and your livelihoods.
“We will not allow the forces of darkness to drive you away from your lands or dampen your spirits. We are building a Benue where peace and justice prevail, and this setback will only strengthen our resolve.”
Governor Alia further directed the deployment of additional security personnel to Saai and neighbouring communities to forestall further attacks by terrorists and armed herdsmen.
He also appealed to residents to remain calm, stay vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest security agencies.
Reaffirming his administration’s determination to restore peace across the state, the governor declared:
“We will not rest until peace is fully restored to every corner of our dear state.”
The latest attack adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Benue State, where repeated attacks on farming communities have continued to threaten lives, livelihoods and food production.
