Federal Government has announced plans to replace the traditional khaki uniform worn by National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members with locally made Adire fabric.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made the disclosure on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
He said the move is part of ongoing reforms designed to support Nigeria’s economy and revive the local textile industry.
According to him, the government wants to prioritise the use of products manufactured within the country.
“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” Olawande said.
The minister explained that adopting Adire for NYSC uniforms would create more opportunities for local textile producers and artisans through increased government patronage.
He also disclosed that the government is reviewing the NYSC posting process to ensure corps members are deployed according to their academic qualifications and professional skills.
Olawande said the changes are intended to make the one-year national service more relevant while promoting national development.
The proposed reforms are expected to strengthen indigenous industries and improve the overall effectiveness of the NYSC scheme.
