Super Eagles star, Ademola Lookman snd Coach Eric Chelle
Nigeria’s strong performance at the group stage of the AFCON 2025 tournament has been rewarded with top individual and technical honours, as Ademola Lookman was named a standout in the Team of the Group Stage, while Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle clinched the Coach of the Group Stage award.
Lookman was influential in Nigeria’s group-stage campaign, delivering pace, creativity and cutting edge in attack. In just two appearances, the Atalanta forward recorded two goals and two assists, playing a decisive role in shaping the Super Eagles’ performances.
In its assessment released on Friday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) praised the winger’s impact, noting that he “was a constant threat with his direct running, creativity, and eye for goal.”
CAF further highlighted Lookman’s tactical flexibility, stating: “His versatility allowed him to play both as an attacking midfielder and a winger, and his movement off the ball was a nightmare for defenders. Lookman’s intelligence in finding pockets of space and his ability to produce key passes in critical moments made him one of the group stage’s most dangerous players.”
On the touchline, Eric Chelle’s tactical acumen earned him recognition as Coach of the Group Stage after guiding Nigeria through the group phase with authority.
According to CAF, “Under the guidance of Eric Chelle, the Nigerian national team displayed tactical brilliance and a cohesive team structure. Chelle’s approach was marked by a solid defensive setup, quick transitions, and giving attacking players the freedom to express themselves.”
The continental body added that “His clear vision and consistent choices allowed Nigeria to perform at their best during the group stage, showcasing a balanced style of play. Chelle’s ability to maximise the potential of his squad and build a collective identity was one of the highlights of the group stage.”
The official Team of the Group Stage featured Mohamed El Shenawy in goal, marshaling a disciplined backline made up of Noussair Mazraoui, Axel Tuanzebe, Edmond Tapsoba and Yahia Attiat-Allah, all of whom combined composure with defensive solidity.
In midfield, creativity and drive were provided by Brahim Díaz, who dictated play, and Carlos Baleba, who dominated transitions across the pitch.
Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, however, narrowly missed out on a place in the team.
Leading the attack were Riyad Mahrez, Amad Diallo and Sadio Mané, whose flair, goals and leadership reinforced their status as some of Africa’s most influential footballers.
