In a dramatic rescue operation, the Anambra State Police Command successfully saved a man who attempted to commit suicide by climbing a high-tension power pole in Awada, Onitsha.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Awka, the state’s capital.
SP Ikenga said officers from the Awada Division responded promptly to distress calls on Tuesday evening.
“The operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene, cordoned off the area to prevent danger, and controlled the large crowd that had gathered,” Ikenga stated.
After persistent efforts by the police and concerned citizens, the man was persuaded to safely descend from the pole.
The individual, whose identity and age were later confirmed at the station, was taken into protective custody.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, ordered a comprehensive medical and mental health evaluation for the man, emphasizing the command’s commitment to his well-being.
“We will provide the necessary support to ensure the victim’s recovery,” Orutugu affirmed.
The commissioner also urged the public to seek peaceful resolutions and support from loved ones or organizations during challenging times, adding that updates on the case would be shared as they emerge.
