Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that more than 2.5 million Nigerians have participated in the online pre-registration for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) since its launch on August 18. Additionally, 72,274 individuals completed in-person registration within the first five days.
This is according to a statement released by Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, following a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
The cumulative figure at the end of week two shows that 1,218,482 (48.12%) are male and 1,313,580 (51.88%) are female,” Olumekun stated, highlighting the gender distribution of online registrants.
He further noted, “In terms of age and occupation, the majority – 1,602,484 (63.29%) – are between the ages of 18 and 34, while 647,528 (25.57%) are students.”
For in-person registration, which commenced on August 25, Olumekun reported, “As of Friday, August 29, a total of 72,274 citizens had either completed the pre-registration process or registered afresh within five days.”
He added, “Of this figure, 35,622 (49.29%) were male and 36,652 (50.71%) were female, with 54,718 (75.71%) aged between 18 and 34, and 30,953 (42.83%) being students.”
Olumekun praised the enthusiastic participation of Nigerians and the efforts of organizations promoting civic engagement.
He emphasized the importance of the online pre-registration portal, introduced in 2021, which allows Nigerians worldwide to begin the registration process at any time.
However, he clarified, “All online pre-registrants must appear physically at any of INEC’s 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide to complete the process with fingerprint and facial biometric capture, without which the online registration is invalid.”
For those preferring in-person registration or lacking online access, Olumekun assured that INEC staff are available at the 811 designated centers nationwide, operating from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
“The list and addresses of these centers are available on INEC’s website and official platforms,” he confirmed.
Detailed breakdowns of registrants by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability status have been published on INEC’s website for public access, ensuring transparency in the registration process.
