The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in collaboration with Bizi Mobile Cashless Consult, on Wednesday sensitised students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on how to onboard the eNaira app.
Lecturers, members of staff and traders in the University community were encouraged to open and onboard the eNaira speed wallet to buy goods, pay school fees and carry out other services.
Speaking at the sensitisation exercise, Hajia Rakiya Mohammed, Director, Information Technology Department and Coordinator, CBN, said part of the objective of the eNaira was to bring every Nigerian onboard including students.
“So, students are also our target and where best to engage students than in a university.
“Our expectations are the same everywhere we go, to intimate people and improve awareness on what eNaira is.
“We know students are innovative and are leaders of tomorrow and they’re the people who are more in tune with technology.
“Our hope is that our engagements are positive and also students become our ambassadors to spread what eNaira is about and get the messages out there so that more Nigerians come to the platform to enjoy the benefits,” she said.
Mohammed, who was represented by Dr Khalifa Nuhu of the Information Technology Department, CBN eNaira secretariat, said payment with eNaira was seamless.
She said, “so you won’t have issues of network problem, and like we’ve mentioned to the students, the beauty of eNaira is, you can onboard using different platforms.
“You can do that using a USSD channel, mobile app, online and also through partner agents, and you don’t even need to have a formal bank account to onboard the eNaira.
“You can use your NIN, which is part of our target to improve financial inclusion.
“So, even people who are not in the formal banking sector can use enaira for transactions.”
Mr Afolabi Oke, Managing Director of Global Infoswift Technologies Ltd., CBN’s partners on eNaira adoption awareness, said the University of Lagos was the first campus for the eNaira sensitisation.
He said, “Unilag is our first campus for this campaign because it’s a pioneer university and we believe that the students are the next generation.
“They are IT savvy, they understand technology and what it means for Nigeria to have our own enaira today which is backed up by the Central Bank of Nigeria.”
Some of the students who spoke after onboarding the eNaira platform said they would make use of their wallets often and inform their friends about the app as it was seamless, fast and easy and free of all forms of charges.
Earlier, the CBN Team led by Mohammed, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.
Ogundipe welcomed the team and told them about some of the achievements of the University. (NAN)
