Crime suspect in police handcuff
A 49-year-old man has been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for allegedly killing his 15-year-old son and secretly burying him within their family compound.
ASP Eno Ikoedem, the command’s Public Relations Officer, revealed the shocking incident in a statement shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Benin.
The alleged crime reportedly took place in Uhe community, Igueben Local Government Area. Police said the arrest followed credible intelligence received on December 6, prompting operatives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, to visit the suspect’s residence, where the grim report was confirmed.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly assaulted his teenage son with a stick on December 5 at around 7:00 p.m., which led to the boy’s death.
“The suspect allegedly dug a grave within the family compound and secretly buried the corpse,” ASP Ikoedem said.
The investigation was aided by crucial information from the boy’s grandmother—who is also the suspect’s mother—and an 82-year-old resident of the household.
Following standard police procedures, the authorities exhumed the grave, documented the scene with photographs, and recovered the stick allegedly used in the assault as evidence.
The suspect is currently in police custody while investigations continue to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika has ordered that the case be transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and prosecution. He also issued a stern warning against all forms of violence and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
ASP Ikoedem reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and enforcing the rule of law.
