Over 1000 students from the 13 local government areas of Nasarawa State have benefitted from scholarship grants facilitated by the federal lawmaker representing Doma, Keana, and Awe Federal Constituency, Hon. Abubakar Hassan Nalaraba.
Speaking at the ceremony which held on Saturday, at De First Crown Hotel Lafia, the Federal lawmaker explained that the initiative was aimed at supporting the educational advancements of the beneficiaries.
According to him, each of the 1,000 tertiary students received the sum of N100, 000 each to assist them navigate through their difficult moments in the course of their studies.
“We took statistics, we equally did our own research, we found out that at least tuition in the State University and some other higher institutions as at the time we made this decision was not above N100,000. We now decided that if we truly want to make a positive impact, if we truly want to support the children of the underprivileged, let us take care of their tuition fees with N100,000, to pay for at least an academic session in the university.”
“We consulted stakeholders to help us do the selection from their respective towns and communities. We are out to make success, to help the underprivileged students, and we have met our target irrespective of what people will say,” stated.
He said apart from the scholarship, the foundation has also been carrying out other empowerment programmes targeting the poor and indigents persons especially youths and women across the state, even as he promised that the foundation will continue to do more for the benefit of the people.
Earlier in a welcome address, Chairman of Nalaraba 2025 Scholarship Grants, Prof. Amirikpa Oyigbenu, praised the lawmaker for the initiative, noting that all beneficiaries had received their payments.
“In every ward, at least one, two, or three students have benefited. We took care to identify indigent children whose parents cannot afford tuition fees,” Oyigbenu said.
In his remarks, the Aren Eggon, Justice Ahmed Ubangari (Rtd), who is the royal father of the day at the occasion, commended the lawmaker for the gesture and charged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the scholarship.
Also speaking, APC Chairman in Nasarawa State, Dr Aliyu Bello, who chaired the occasion and the mother of the day, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yahaya, secretary State Scholarship Board, both urged students to use the funds wisely to justify the lawmaker’s efforts to empower students and less privileged in the state.
They commended the lawmaker for initiating projects and programs that are beneficial to the constituency, the state and the country at large, urging him to sustain the tempo.
Some of the beneficiaries, Salvation Abimiku David, Sufyanu Bushrat Mamman and Ibrahim Yahaya Barde, thanked the lawmaker for the awards which they said will go a long way in easing the difficulties they have been going through in the pursuit of their education.
