North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly selected his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, as his potential successor, according to information shared by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) with lawmakers.
The intelligence agency disclosed that Ju Ae, believed to be about 13 years old, has increasingly appeared alongside her father at major state functions, military parades, and diplomatic engagements. Notably, she accompanied him during a high-profile visit to Beijing in 2023 and has been present at several key national celebrations, suggesting her rising prominence within the country’s political structure.
According to the NIS, her frequent public appearances and visible involvement in state activities indicate that she has entered what officials describe as the “successor designation” phase. Analysts are now watching closely to see whether she will attend the upcoming Workers’ Party congress later this month, a major political event where North Korea outlines its policies on foreign relations, defence, and nuclear development.
Kim Ju Ae is the only publicly acknowledged child of Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju. She was first introduced to the public in 2022 when state television broadcast images of her inspecting an intercontinental ballistic missile alongside her father. Since then, she has regularly featured in official media reports and photographs, often portrayed walking beside the leader or seated prominently during major events.
Observers say her growing visibility has also helped reshape Kim Jong Un’s public image, presenting him as a family-oriented leader while subtly positioning his daughter as an emerging figure of authority within the regime.
The reported succession plan represents a significant departure from North Korea’s traditionally male-dominated leadership structure. Although reports suggest Kim Jong Un may have an older son, the child has never been publicly acknowledged, further fuelling speculation about Ju Ae’s elevated status.
Political analysts have also raised questions about the timing of the move, noting that Kim Jong Un remains relatively young and appears to be in good health. Some experts believe the early grooming of a successor may be aimed at ensuring long-term regime stability and continuity.
