The DRC produces more than 70 percent of the world's supply of cobalt, which is essential for batteries used in electric cars, many laptop computers, and mobile phones.
A devastating series of landslides in eastern Congo’s South Kivu province has left up to 500 artisanal miners trapped, with 10 bodies recovered so far.
According to a police spokesman, “The collapse occurred in a remote area where miners were working in the informal sector.”
The exact number of casualties remains uncertain due to the informal nature of the mining activities.
Rescue Efforts
Volunteers are working tirelessly to recover the remaining bodies and survivors.

The police spokesman stated, “We are doing our best to rescue those trapped and provide assistance to the affected families.”
The challenging terrain and ongoing heavy rains have complicated the rescue efforts.
The affected area is home to numerous internally displaced persons who had fled the ongoing conflict between government troops and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. Some of these displaced individuals are believed to be among those buried under the landslides.
The police spokesman expressed concern over the vulnerability of these individuals, emphasizing the need for urgent assistance.
*Landslides in Villages*
The police reported landslides in nearby villages, but fortunately, no casualties have been reported in these areas.
The region’s hilly terrain and recent heavy rains have increased the risk of further landslides, prompting authorities to issue warnings and take precautions.
