Former Vice President Namadi Sambo has been turbaned as Sardaunan Zazzau
In a vibrant display of culture and tradition, the Emir of Zazzau, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, officially turbaned former Vice President Namadi Sambo as the Sardaunan Zazzau during a grand ceremony held Saturday, October 11, at the Emir’s Palace in Zaria.
The honour, which was originally bestowed upon Sambo in 2014 by the late Emir Alhaji Shehu Idris, was formally conferred over a decade later.
Explaining the delay, Emir Bamalli highlighted the significance of the title, describing it as a tribute to Sambo’s distinguished public service, his role in national development, and his dedication to humanitarian causes.
“We hope and pray that he will continue to be a bridge builder between the Zazzau Emirate and his network of friends and relationships,” the Emir said, expressing confidence in Sambo’s ability to uphold the values of unity, peace, and progress.
The coronation drew a distinguished audience, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, serving and former governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and prominent political figures.
In response to the historic turbaning, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended warm congratulations to the former Vice President, acknowledging the cultural and historical weight the title of Sardaunan Zazzau carries within Northern Nigeria.
In a statement released by the presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu noted that the honour reflects the Emirate’s confidence in Sambo’s integrity and lifelong commitment to societal progress.
“The title is a recognition of his exemplary leadership and enduring contributions to national development,” the President stated, adding that Sambo’s humility and statesmanship continue to serve as an inspiration.
President Tinubu also praised Emir Bamalli for preserving the rich tradition of recognizing individuals whose lives reflect the values of service, unity, and patriotism.
As Sambo steps into his new role within the traditional institution, the President encouraged him to remain a guiding light for younger generations and to work alongside community leaders in promoting peace and sustainable development across the nation.
