National Assembly has revealed plans to initiate a bill to ensure that Presidents-elect are sworn in the arcade of the National Assembly, a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele disclosed this while responding to questions on the June 12 anniversary.
He also announced plans to initiate another legislation, requiring the President to deliver the ‘State of the Nation Address’ in the National Assembly on June 12 annually. “It is our desire to institutionalise the State of the Nation Address. We will bring a bill to address it, to ensure that it is institutionalised. People should look forward to it,” Bamidele said.
The Senate Leader emphasized the historical significance of June 12, saying, “There is no better day than June 12 for the President to address the nation, because of its historical significance. It is a joint sitting of the National Assembly. Nigerians should look forward to this legislative initiative.”
The proposed bill aims to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by promoting transparency and accountability.
By having the President deliver the State of the Nation Address in the National Assembly, citizens will be better informed about the country’s progress and challenges.
The National Assembly’s plan to swear-in Presidents-elect in the chambers will mark a new tradition in Nigeria’s democratic history.
This move is expected to promote national unity and stability.
