Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Badagry, Lagos State, has intercepted seven fibre boats carrying numerous bags of foreign parboiled rice along the Badagry Porto-Novo creek.
A credible source informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry on Sunday that the operation occurred under intensified patrols led by the base’s new Commanding Officer, Capt. Leye Omotayo.
“Upon spotting our personnel, several individuals on the boats fled by jumping into the water, though a few were apprehended,” the source revealed.
“Those caught were primarily hired boat operators working for smugglers engaged in illegal activities.”
While the FOB Badagry has not yet released an official statement, NAN reports that since Capt. Omotayo took command, the base has ramped up 24-hour waterway patrols.
The Navy has also strengthened collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and the local community to combat smuggling in the border region.
“This synergy is key to curbing illicit activities and securing our waterways,” the source added.
