NAWOJ urges FG to reconstitute NDDC Board

The Zonal Executive Committee of National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has called on the Federal Government to expedite action in reconstituting the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

NAWOJ also condemned the deplorable state of roads in the zone, and called on governments to release funds promptly to contractors handling the various road projects to facilitate timely delivery of the jobs as well as to ensure the contractors execute the jobs based on approved specifications.

The association stated this in a communique issued at the end of the Zonal Executive Committee meeting, which was held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State’s capital.

The communique reiterated the warning by the National Secretariat against giving awards to individuals indiscriminately and advised state chapters to write to the National Secretariat through the zone for approval before giving awards.

The ZEC meeting, which was presided over by the Vice President, Zone F, Uduak Obeten Okorn, exhaustively discussed issues affecting the Zone and the Association and resolutions were made on the way forward.

The ZEC commended Akwa Ibom State Chapter of NAWOJ for hosting the ZEC Meeting and called on governors in the zone to support NAWOJ in their various states.

It also condemned the activities of illegal refineries that have caused so much soot in the region especially in Rivers State, fearing that this might have adverse effects on the health of residents.

The ZEC, further, commended the efforts of First Ladies in the zone in the fight against Gender Based Violence (GBV), and called on states that are yet to domesticate the VAPP Law, to do so without further delay.

The ZEC in session called on women in the zone to come out and participate actively in politics, in order to be able to vote and be voted for, especially as the country prepares for the 2023 general elections.

It also expressed worry over the increasing rate of drug abuse among youths and called on relevant authorities to heighten sensitization on the side effects of drugs, while calling on our youths to shun drugs and other social vices so as to live useful and meaningful lives in future.

It however, reaffirmed its resolution that members who have not held any position in the association’s executive committee, can not qualified to vie for principal positions of Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer during elections.
