Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerian students to begin preparing for leadership roles, stressing that the country’s future depends on a new generation of leaders driven by integrity, competence and compassion.
Obi made the call during the NextGen Mentorship and Leadership Initiative held at Madonna University, Okija Campus, where he interacted with students on the theme, “Beyond Now: Raising the Next Generation of Leaders.”
Sharing details of the engagement, the former Anambra State governor said the session provided an opportunity to listen to the concerns of young Nigerians, many of whom expressed frustration over poor governance and corruption, which they believe have limited their opportunities.
According to him, the students’ questions reflected the realities confronting many youths across the country, but also revealed a strong desire to contribute positively to Nigeria’s development.
“I reminded them that leadership is the greatest determinant of a nation’s progress. A true leader must possess the character, competence, capacity, and compassion to make sacrifices for the good of the people,” Obi said.
He added: “Nigeria’s future depends on leaders committed to safeguarding lives, investing in education, creating opportunities, and building effective institutions.”
Obi urged the students to remain focused on their education and prepare themselves for future leadership responsibilities, noting that they should see themselves as active participants in shaping the country’s future rather than mere observers.
“I encouraged the students to take their education seriously, to prepare themselves for leadership, and to see themselves not merely as spectators but as agents of change. Through active participation in the democratic process, they have the power to enthrone leaders with integrity and the capacity to propel our nation forward,” he stated.
As part of his commitment to supporting education, Obi presented a cheque of ₦15 million to Madonna University to assist the institution in advancing its educational programmes.
He described investment in education as one of the most effective ways of developing the human capital required for national growth and sustainable development.
“Investing in education remains one of the most effective ways to develop the human capital necessary for national progress,” he said.
Obi expressed optimism that Nigeria could achieve greater progress by nurturing responsible and visionary leaders, concluding: “Together, by raising a new generation of responsible and visionary leaders, we can build the Nigeria of our dreams that is POssible.”
