Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Comrade Ini Ememobong has called for a holistic rebirth process following the defection of key officials to other parties ahead of 2027 general elections.
Ememobong, a former publicity secretary of the party in Akwa Ibom State and a former member of the state executive council in charge of the Ministry of Information and later Ministry of Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, made the call after he visited the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum and the National Publicity Secretary of the party , Debo Ologunagba in Abuja
Ememobong did not defect alongside with Governor Umo Eno in June to the All Progressives Congress (APC) instead he chose to resign his position as a commissioner.
According to observers, PDP has been left without visible structures in Akwa Ibom State after the governor joined APC and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio later handed over the leadership of APC in Akwa Ibom State to Governor Umo Eno.
Eno while defecting had vowed to take charge of the PDP as well and urged any member of the state executive council not willing to move with him to APC to resign.
“Earlier today, my brother, Onofiok and I met with the Ag. National Chairman of our party, the People’s Democratic, Amb. Umar Damagum, National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, and the National Youth Leader, Prince Muhammed Suleiman,” Ememobong stated on his social media handle.
He said discussions during his visit to the party leadership centred on the future of the party at the National and State levels and “the need for a holistic rebirth process.”
It would be recalled that Governor Eno, who was elected on the platform of the PDP in 2023 defected to the APC in June this year and directed all commissioners and Special Advisers to move with him to the ruling party.
During his formal defection in Uyo, the state capital, he said his decision was based on the need to secure the approval of the Federal Government towards the realization of the Ibom Deep Sea project at Mbo local government area of the state.
However, since his defection, there appears to be no indication that the deep sea port project has attracted any attention of the Federal Government.
His directive saw 24 members of the 26-member of the state assembly leaving PDP to join the APC with one lawmaker who represents Onna state constituency, Johnny Udofot declining to defect to the APC.
