
Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as the date for local government elections across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Plangji Daniel Cishak, made the announcement during a press briefing held on Thursday at the Commission’s headquarters in Jos.
Cishak said the elections would be conducted in line with the relevant legal frameworks, including the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law 2024.

“Today, we are carrying out one of the most important constitutional responsibilities assigned to us as an electoral body – the issuance of notice and schedule for the 2026 local government elections.
In compliance with the law, the polls will hold on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. across the 17 local government councils of Plateau State.” he said
The PLASIEC chairman further urged political parties and stakeholders to study the timetable carefully and operate within the legal framework to ensure credible and peaceful participation.
“PLASIEC remains committed to upholding the rule of law throughout the process,” he added.
According to the schedule, party primaries and the resolution of any disputes are expected to take place between January 12 and 30, 2026. Collection and submission of nomination forms will run from February 2 to March 2, followed by the publication of candidates’ particulars on March 7. Screening exercises for both chairmanship and councillorship candidates will be held between March 11 and 16.
The final list of cleared candidates will be released on March 30, while political campaigns are to commence on March 31 and close by midnight on August 30, 2026. The official register of voters will be published on July 21, and political parties must submit names and addresses of their polling agents by August 12.
Mr. Cishak reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election, urging all political actors to act responsibly and in accordance with the law and electoral guidelines.
