Plateau University raises alarm over herders’ encroachment, calls for enhanced security measures

Plateau State University (PLASU) in Bokkos has raised concerns about the ongoing encroachment of the campus area by herders and called for improved security measures to address the issue.

During a meeting with Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Steve Yabanet, Vice Chancellor Prof. Shedrach Best highlighted the security breaches faced by the institution, emphasizing the need for a police station to be established to combat the menace.

Prof. Best emphasized the challenging terrain of Bokkos, where farming is predominant and large quantities of Irish potatoes and other commodities are produced.

“Because of this potentials, the campus were unfortunate to be situated around the communities which have suffered persistent attacks.The campus fencing is not completed and on several occasions we have witness cases of attacks, rapes and attempted rapes on our students.

“We have shared mischief where people break down our fence to made in their cattle to graze in our campus. So this are the security challenges that were surrounded with.

“We appeal to security agents, particularly the police who are saddle with the responsibility of internal security to intensify efforts towards establishing police station in the campus area and to also improve on constant surveillance and patrol within Barkin-Ladi and Bokkos LGA to guaranteed smooth movement of students and lecturers.”

CP Yabanet shared that the visit aimed to implement a strategic operation initiated by the Inspector General of Police to protect higher institutions of learning nationwide.

He assured that the police force would deploy manpower and resources to safeguard PLASU and other universities in Plateau State.

“our job is to protect all the higher institutions because of what is happening in other places there is going to be execution of this laudable initiative of the Inspector General of Police. And I know we have two very important higher institutions on the Plateau; University of Jos, the Plateau State University.

So were going to do all within our reach to make sure we deploy manpower and equipment in Bokkos and University of Jos to be the beneficiaries of this initiative launched by the Inspector General of police.

And also we intend to launch a robust initiative whereby were ready and we have a structure because you cannot protect an institution from outside. It has to be domicile within the school. Equally, I want to be proactive not to taking by surprise as we intend to improve our patrol and have interaction with students which they will be feeding us with intelligent reports. We have done that before and we will do it again.”
