The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted an interim injunction restraining the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from taking any further action in the River Park Estate dispute.
The court’s decision came after the developers of the estate, JonahCapital Ltd and Houses for Africa Ltd, filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu, in his ruling, restrained the police, EFCC, and other parties from taking any action that may foist a “fait accompli” on the court in the matter.
The dispute arose from several petitions over alleged trespass and ownership of the estate, which led to the I-G setting up a Special Investigation Panel (SIP).
However, the developers claimed that despite the panel’s conclusion, Fakorede, a former head of SARS, commenced another investigation, inviting and harassing them.
The Ghanaian investors, led by Samuel Esson Jonah, Kojo Ansah Mensah, and Victor Quainoo, sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining the police and EFCC officials from further inviting, intimidating, harassing, or arresting them. They also demanded N200 million in damages.
Justice Egwuatu adjourned the matter until June 26 for the commencement of the hearing on the land dispute.
