Statisticians brainstorm on solutions to insecurity in Nigeria

The Nigerian Statisticians Association (NSA) has organized a 3 day workshop to brainstorm on how best to tackle the high-level insecurity in the country that seemed to have defile all solutions.

The workshop which was held in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has participants, stakeholders drawn from various parts of the country.

The President of NSA, Dr. Goddey Ebulu in his opening address told the participants that the annual event is aimed at finding solutions to burning national issues will this year focus on the high level insecurity that is bedeviling the country.

Dr. Ebulu told members that this year’s theme “” Security Challenges in Nigeria and Associates Challenges: A Statistical Overview” is aimed at finding lasting solutions to the high level insecurity in the country that seemed to have defile all solutions.

He noted that erudite scholars and professionals have been carefully selected to present papers on key security topics and find solutions, adding that at the end of the workshop, a communique will be issued which will be sent to the government and other relevant stakeholders for implementation.

He stressed the need for them to collaborate with other stakeholders in different sectors of the economy in finding lasting solutions to the dreaded monster which has killed many and has bring untold hardship on the Nigerian populace.

Dr. Ebulu lamented that while arrangements for the workshop were going on, eight family members of the National Vice President of the association Professor Guleme were kidnapped and he had to cancel his scheduled flight for the workshop.

He disclosed that six of the abducted victims have been released but two are still held captive while calling for prayers.

He announced that eminent Nigerians have been nominated for investiture by the association including the Statisticians General of the Federation and the Honourable Minister of Finance and Physical Planning as well as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority among other distinguished Nigerians.

One of the participants at the workshop, who is a retired Director with the Federal Government and a former president of the association, Dr. Boniface Amobi described this year’s theme of the conference as apt as advocacy on insecurity in the country needs to be given holistic approach to tackle it.

He called on the various state governments to set up state bureau of statistics just like the national Bureau, in order to enhance synergy with other sectors of the economy for effective performance.
