Yobe State Governor and Chairman of the Lake Chad Governors Forum, Mai Mala Buni, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the reconstruction of key roads in the Lake Chad Basin.
The roads, including Dikwa-Ngala and Bama-Banki, will be reconstructed under the Dangote Tax Credit Scheme.
Buni made the commendation while chairing his first meeting with officials of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) in Ndjamena, Chad.
“These are not just national concerns, they are regional imperatives,” Buni said, highlighting the importance of cooperation and development in the region.
The governor emphasized the need for enhanced security, cooperation, humanitarian response, sustainable development, and climate resilience in the Lake Chad Basin.
He also reaffirmed the forum’s commitment to tackling emerging threats such as youth radicalization, illicit arms trade, and ecological degradation.
Buni expressed his commitment to working closely with the commission and the Federal Government to achieve the ideals of the commission and the region.
“As we deepen collaboration with Lake Chad Basin Commission, I urge the Commission to continue playing its central coordination role, especially in harmonizing our investment efforts and strengthening mechanisms for joint monitoring and accountability,” he said.
The governor also highlighted the importance of agriculture in the region, saying that collaborative efforts should be made to strengthen security and empower people with agricultural inputs to facilitate food sufficiency and security.
“Therefore, we should explore the opportunities at our disposal to improve agricultural production and development among the member states to fast track economic growth,” Buni added.
