U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States and Russia will hold a crucial meeting on Wednesday.
_“We have a meeting with Russia tomorrow,”_ Trump told reporters, adding _“We’re going to see what happens.”_
This meeting is happening just days before a deadline Trump gave to Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire in the Ukraine war.
Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is set to travel to Russia for the meeting. According to Trump, the goal of these talks is to work toward ending the war between Ukraine and Russia.
_“This is the one I’m trying to stop. And one I’m working hardest on,”_ Trump said ¹.
The urgency of these talks is heightened by Trump’s deadline for Putin to make progress toward peace in Ukraine by this Friday. If no progress is made, Trump has threatened to impose tougher sanctions on Russia.
These sanctions would target countries buying Russian oil and gas to limit Moscow’s ability to finance its war in Ukraine.
On Monday, Trump also announced plans to raise tariffs on India because of its ongoing trade with Moscow.
However, Trump didn’t specify the exact tariff rate.
The outcome of Wednesday’s meeting will determine whether these sanctions and tariffs will be implemented.
In summary, the U.S.-Russia meeting on Wednesday, led by envoy Steve Witkoff, aims to push for a ceasefire in Ukraine ahead of Trump’s Friday deadline.
The outcome of these talks will influence Trump’s decisions on sanctions against Russia and potentially against countries trading with Moscow.
Trump emphasized the importance of progress toward peace, saying to Russia, _“Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed”_ to avoid sanctions .
