The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued an urgent call to action to prevent the spread of cholera in Nigerian schools.
With the recent outbreaks of cholera reported in Lagos and other states, UNICEF emphasized the need for extensive measures to safeguard school children.
“The cholera outbreaks have critically affected children and the young population, who face substantial health risks”.
“Children are prone to severe dehydration and high mortality rate, making it essential to take immediate action, said Celine Lafoucrier, Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office.
Lafoucrier stressed that good sanitation, hygiene practices, improved access to clean water, and regular handwashing with soap and clean water are crucial to combat the outbreak in schools.
“There is an urgent need for adequate awareness across the country to sensitize the populace on cholera outbreak and preventive measures,” she added.
UNICEF’s concern is warranted, as cholera outbreaks have already affected several states, putting school children at risk. The organization urged authorities to take proactive steps to prevent further spread and ensure the safety of Nigeria’s young population.
“We cannot afford to wait; the time to act is now,” Lafoucrier emphasized. “By working together, we can prevent the spread of cholera in schools and protect the health and well-being of Nigeria’s children.”
