The late Lt. Gen. (Sen.) Jeremiah Timbut Useni was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown of Pilgani, Langtang North, Plateau State, as dignitaries from across Nigeria gathered to honor the former military officer and politician.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, paid tribute to Useni’s unwavering service to Nigeria.

“General Useni was a patriot who dedicated his life to the unity and progress of this nation. His contributions, both in the military and in public service, will continue to inspire generations,” Nentawe said.
He described Useni as a leader whose impact transcended military and political spheres, emphasizing his role in national development.

In his tribute, Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, hailed Useni as a symbol of hope and statesmanship. He called for genuine reconciliation among the people of Plateau State.
Reflecting on Useni’s later years, the governor noted his dedication to peacebuilding and urged citizens to embrace unity and forgiveness.
“It is impossible to go through life without disagreements, but true leadership is knowing when to reconcile. If we desire unity, it must be built on genuine forgiveness,” Mutfwang stated.

On behalf of the government and people of Plateau State, he expressed gratitude to all who ensured a befitting burial for the late General and acknowledged condolence messages from across the country, including from former Military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

The funeral service, held at the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) RCC Langtang, drew a distinguished crowd of military and political leaders. Senate Minority Leader Patrick Abba Moro led a delegation from the National Assembly, while the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, was represented by Major Gen. Oyinlola, General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation Safe Haven.
Bishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon, who officiated the service, described Useni as a leader whose legacy was defined by service rather than titles.
“A true leader listens to the people and acts in their best interest. General Useni embodied this principle throughout his career,” the bishop said. “Leadership is a privilege, and one day, all leaders will be held accountable for their actions.”
Lt. Gen. Useni, a distinguished military officer, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and prominent political figure, was born on February 16, 1943. His legacy of leadership and service to Nigeria remains indelible.
