PATRICK ABANG, Calabar –
The first female Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River State, Mrs. Elizabeth Akinlade has said the essence of FRSC road enforcement is to reduce accident rates in the state by 15 per cent.
Addressing Journalists on Tuesday during a courtesy call to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Cross River Council in Calabar, Mrs. Akinlade noted that the FRSC was created by law to ensure that Nigerians stay alive and become meaningful to the country.
She said she was at the Earnest Etim Bassey Press Center to solicit cooperation from journalists in the state, adding that such cooperation was necessary if the corps must succeed.
“I am here among you to solicit your cooperation in sensitizing the public on why we are carrying out enforcement on our roads’
“Many people do not know that we are helping Nigerians to stay alive because many of those who have died in accidents are in their prime and are supposed to be useful to the country.
“It is unfortunate that here in Nigeria, we have to force people to stay alive. One of our strategic goals is to ensure that we reduce accidents on our roads by 15%,” she said.
She reiterated that her organization has mapped out a strategy to monitor motorists in the state and promised that she will work hard to meet the overall goal of the Corps in the state.
The State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Victor Udu welcomed the new Commander to the state and thanked her for recognizing the role of journalists in the course of her job.
He however pledged cooperation with the FRSC in terms of disseminating adequate information about the activities of the corps in the state.
