Datti Baba- Ahmed , Labour Party Vice Presidential Candidate during the 2023 general election
Former vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has cast doubt on the likelihood of Peter Obi securing widespread support from Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a recent interview, Datti offered a candid assessment of the political landscape, suggesting that Obi may face an uphill task in winning over the region.
“I as much as possible try to avoid names at this stage or the politics of everyone but it is very unlikely that the North will Rally around OK,” Datti said firmly.
Despite his reservations, the former running mate clarified that his comments reflect his personal view and not a fallout, emphasizing that he still maintains “an excellent relationship and much respect” for the political figures involved.
Datti also disclosed that he had earlier advised Obi to begin building strategic alliances well ahead of the next election cycle. Recounting a conversation from January 31, 2024, he said:

“I told him, ‘Your Excellency, from this point, there is Rabiu Kwankwaso, there is Nasir El-Rufai, I will like to suggest that you approach them.’”
According to him, the suggestion was part of a broader long-term political strategy necessary for electoral success.
“If in 2024 you cannot plan 2027, I am sorry I can’t continue to be with you,” he added.
Datti further noted that Obi has since begun engaging politically with Kwankwaso, but questioned the effectiveness of such an alliance.
“Will it work? It’s a big question. We’ll wait and see,” he said.
He also appeared to fault Obi’s approach to internal challenges within the Labour Party, arguing that leadership requires staying back to resolve disputes.
“Someone who got Labour Party ticket should have stayed and fixed the problems,” Datti stated.
His remarks add a fresh dimension to early political conversations ahead of 2027, particularly around coalition-building and regional dynamics that could shape the outcome of the race.
