Former Benue State Governor, Sen. Gabriel Suswam
Former Benue State Governor and ex-Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has officially declared his intention to contest the Benue North-East Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Suswam made the declaration during an interview on Arise Television, where he explained that his decision was influenced by the prevailing political direction in Benue State.
“Benue State, since I started politics in 1998, is a place where the people believe in one party,” he said.
“Benue State for its first 16 years was completely a PDP state. And then subsequently after that, they moved to the APC.”
The former governor noted that his political decision reflects the will and preference of the people of the state, stressing that he would not deviate from what he described as the dominant political ideology of Benue residents.
“As a Benue son, I won’t be an exception to what my people want and what my people believe. They now believe in the principles and philosophy of the APC,” he added.
Speaking further on his 2027 ambition, Suswam made it clear that contesting for the Senate remains the only viable option available to him at this stage of his political career.
“I’m a politician. And as a politician, if you are still strong enough to contest an election, you always want to contest elections. The only election that I can contest now is the Senate,” he stated.
The two-term former governor also pointed out constitutional limitations preventing him from seeking another term as governor.
“Of course, I can’t go back to run for governor even if I want to run for that, the constitution forbids me from running for governor again. So of course, I’ll be running for Senate,” he said.
Suswam’s declaration is expected to reshape political calculations in Benue North-East as parties and aspirants begin early maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections.
